What is Haute Couture?
The term “Haute Couture” refers to designs that are specially produced for each client. Haute couture is a fashion that is built entirely by hand from beginning to end. It is constructed from expensive, high-quality, and often expensive fabrics embroidered with breathtaking detail by very skilled sewers who perform laborious, time-consuming techniques.
In French, the word couture translates simply as “dressmaking” or “sewing.” But it can also be used as a synonym for haute couture or to express the same thing. The French word Haute means high. They include eight corresponding (or foreign) brands: Versace, Elie Saab, Fendi, Giorgio Armani Privé, Iris Van Herpen, Valentino, Ulyana Sergeenko, and Viktor & Rolf. The Fédération Française de la Couture may also participate in the festivals held during its two annual couture weeks.
What are the rules of haute couture?
Haute couture houses are subject to tight rules and regulations set by the FHCM, which has created much mythology. It was proclaimed haute couture first in 1945 and is a category of clothing that can only be awarded (or revoked if the requirements are not met) by a commission designated by the Ministry of Industry.
A member shall qualify for haute couture status if they produce made-to-order garments in an atelier with at least 15 full-time employees. A member shall also employ 20 full-time technical staff members at any one of their ateliers.
The public can see the collections in January and July, including a minimum of 50 designs for daytime and evening wear.Each look must be designed for private clients after multiple fittings are required. In addition to being invited as a guest member each season, brands can also become members after being invited four times in a row.

How much does couture dress cost?
It depends on how embellished you want your garment to be. For daywear, the average price tag is around $20,000, though it does depend on the brand (Chanel Haute Couture is about $40-80,000), while wedding gowns range from $100,000 to $150,000 depending on their elaborate embroidery.

Why is Haute Couture so expensive?

Fashion houses don’t make a ton of money from haute couture – some places lose money on the event – but Couture Week still offers more luxury and glamor than its fair share.

How much does an haute couture designer make?
Designers of haute couture earn a wide variety of salaries. The salary of some haute couture designers varies a lot, while that of others is extremely low. The majority of haute couture designers lie between these two extremes.
As of the June 2016 survey, the salary for haute couture designers was $15.198 per hour. Haute couture designers earn a median salary of $74,410 per year or $6,200 per month. Those working as haute couture designers earned $64,260/year or $5,355/month on average. A range of $32,320 to $130,900 per year could be found in salaries of the lowest and highest 10% of haute couture designers.
