How to improve your recovery after surgery?

Whether you are just about to go into surgery, or you have had one, it is important that you take into consideration the steps for better recovery. 

While some people undergo relatively simpler procedures which allow them to bounce back in no time, others with more extensive surgery need a lot of time to heal. 

Regardless, during this healing time, you must adhere to the care instructions dispensed by the General Surgeon in Lahore

Other things to do to improve your recovery include:

Diet

Your diet plays a principal role in your physical health and hence, healing. Therefore, it is important that you use your diet to derive energy. Do not give into unhealthy foods like refined carbohydrates or sugar, but go for lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables. 

Some people may have complaints of constipation in the aftermath of the surgery. They should follow the instructions of their doctor, and don’t skip on meals, as that can make it worse. 

Similarly, make sure that you hydrate as per the instructions of your doctor. 

Pain management

It is important that you also manage your pain properly. It means not going overboard with the drugs, and it also means that you should taking unnecessary pain. 

Not only is taking pain when there is solution available overtaxing yourself for nothing, but you might endanger your health as well. If you are avoiding coughing because of the pain, you put yourself at risk of pneumonia. 

Therefore, take the medication when necessary. Don’t bring things to the point where the pain killer also falls short of offering a solution. 

Physical activity 

Even though it may be extremely hard to get moving, but you must to prevent the risk of potentially fatal problems like DVT. So, as per the frequency recommended by your doctor, pack some light walk in your schedule. Do not overdo with the activity, as that would exhaust you and thus overexert you. 

Protocol for coughing and sneezing

When we cough or sneeze, we put pressure on our abdominal muscles. If you have had surgery in that region, you must be careful about sneezing and coughing so that you don’t undo the sutures. 

Try to brace yourself before by holding the area with the incision by your hand or by a cushion so that some pressure is eased off of it. 

Reporting any anomalies 

It is important that you regularly observe your incision and report any anomalies to your doctor. For example, note if there is formation of pus, or discharge otherwise from the wound, what is the color of the incision etc. 

Shower and don’t swim

Soaking the wound in water can lead to problems with the healing, as it makes the incision line weaker. So, if you have been allowed by the doctor to bathe, then shower for minimal contact. 

Similarly, as swimming also means immersing your wound in the water for longer periods of time, hence, refrain from it till okayed otherwise by your doctor. 

Take care of the wound 

Taking care of the wound to prevent infection is perhaps the most important thing that you should be doing. If you do get an infection, it not only means that your healing is delayed, but it also means greater discomfort and pain for you. 

Thus, make sure that you change the dressing and clean the incision as advised by your doctor. It is important that you carefully clean your hands first. Do not pull at the scabs that might be forming, as that can affect the healing process. 

Follow-up visits to the doctor

It is crucial that you do not miss your appointment with your General Surgeon in Islamabad, as it is important for an expert to look at your wound themselves to ascertain if healing went alright, if something is amiss or if you need to have your medication updated.
